Energy Saving Tips

Summer - Cooling:

  1. Set the thermostat of air-conditioners to 24-26°.
  2. Close curtains during the day and open them during the evening/night to cool down the building.
  3. Ensure all air-conditioners are regularly maintained to remove dust and ensure adequate air flow.
  4. Consider installing fans, they use minimal energy, operate at a fraction of the running cost of air-conditioners and can reduce the number of days you use air-conditioning.

Winter - Heating:

  1. Set the thermostat of heaters to 18-20°.
  2. Open curtains during the day and close them during the evening/night to keep the heat inside.
  3. Only heat and light rooms you are using. Where possible, zone your lighting and ducted heating and close off doors to unoccupied rooms.
  4. Keep the heat inside during winter - seal up any gaps and cracks in external walls, floors and ceiling.
  5. Dress for the weather - wear extra layers inside and lower your heating temperature.
  6. Close blinds, curtains, windows and doors on cold days to keep the heat in.
  7. Ensure all heaters are regularly maintained to remove dust and ensure adequate air flow.
  8. Minimise your use of portable electric heaters.

All year round:

  1. Consider using energy effecient light globes as an alternative to general lighting and downlights.
  2. Switch off appliances not in use at the wall.
  3. Make sure fridge door seals are tight and free from gaps so cold air doesn't escape. If you have a second fridge - only turn it on when you need it. Keep the fridge clean and ventilated.
  4. Dry clothes on the line, not in the dryer.
  5. Turn off lights when not in use.
  6. Wash clothes only when you have a full load and use cold water.
  7. Run the dishwasher only when it's full.
  8. Fill the kettle with only the water you need.
  9. Install star rated showerheads to minimise hot water usage.
  10. Buy energy-efficient appliances with low standby power usage.
